We have an old ornamental cherry tree in our back yard. This year, it started dropping its leaves early (in July) and they are almost all dropped by now. The leaves are all perforated with tiny holes, yet there are no obvious signs of insects. What should we do? thank you in advance for your help.
Due to the wet, rainy spring we experienced this year many cherry trees were plagued by foliar diseases. What you describe most likely was caused by a fungal disease commonly known as shot hole disease. The disease causes brown spots on leaves which eventually fall out leaving circular holes. At this point rake up and dispose of the fallen leaves. Very rarely is this a serious problem.
